Each
day in this early Moravian community,
the settlers came together for morning
and evening devotions, consciously
placing their lives within the context
of God's Word. Each day one or
more persons of the congregation would
go to each of the homes in Herrnhut to
bring the "watchword" for the day,
which was a text from the
Scriptures. Over
time, the Moravian community developed
these daily Bible passages into a
devotional book, which is still
published. I gave each of the
district superintendents of our
Conference a copy of the Moravian
Daily Texts this year and have
invited them to follow it with me. I
want these leaders to travel with me in
the Scriptures during this
year. As we
look out upon the remainder of 2004,
anticipating our General Conference in
April and our Jurisdictional Conference
in July, let everything we do and
everything we say be pleasing to
God. Indeed,
let us heed the Moravian watchword text
for the year, Colossians 3:17 --
"Whatever you do in word or deed, do
everything in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father
through him. " And
remember, "The steadfast love of the
LORD never ceases, His mercies never
come to an end; they are new every
morning" (Lamentations
3:22-23).

Living
in the context of God's
Word
In
the early 18th century, refugees from
Bohemia and Moravia began arriving at
the estate of Count Nicholas Ludwig von
Zinzendorf, where he gave them a
welcome and land on which to establish
a community. This community was
ultimately called Herrnhut, or
literally, "Watch of the Lord. "
