This
year the United Methodist Church holds
its General
Conference,
a gathering held only once every four
years that brings together delegates
from across the U.S. and several other
nations. Only
the General Conference has the
authority to speak for the whole church
on matters related to doctrine and
church law. The
North Georgia Conference, of which
Gateway is a part, will have 28
delegates (14 lay and 14 clergy) at the
General Conference among the 994 total
delegates. A
regional gathering From
July 14 -17, the UM Southeastern
Jurisdictional
Conference
will be held at Lake Junaluska, North
Carolina. The
Southeastern Jurisdiction is the
largest jurisdiction in the UMC with
2.9 million members. It is comprised of
annual (i.e. regional) conferences in
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky,
Mississippi, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Tennessee, and
Virginia. The
North Georgia Conference will send 56
delegates to the Southeastern
Jurisdictional gathering, out of a
total of 556 delegates. In
addition to these two important
conferences, the North Georgia Annual
Conference will hold its yearly
gathering in June, meeting June 15-18
at the Classic Center in
Athens. Gateway
will send two delegates the annual
conference session, out of a total of
about 2,000 delegates. Our two
representatives will be Pastor Jerry
Varnado and Lay Delegate Nancy
Fajardo.
