The
11-member singing group BASICS
(Brothers And Sisters In Christ
Singing) from Mt. Zion UMC in Marietta
kicked off the event with contemporary
Christian music and personal testimony.
Elizabeth
Simmons, a conference youth delegate
from Athens First UMC, then welcomed
the speaker, calling David "a great
example of a Christian both on and off
the field." But
it was obvious from the sea of Georgia
Bulldog hats and T-shirts that the UGA
quarterback needed little
introduction. After
sharing some of his experiences as a
college athlete and as a member of
Snellville UMC, David talked about the
importance of maintaining a strong
relationship with Christ. Before
leaving, he signed autographs and spent
a moment with each fan lined up to meet
him. After
more music from the praise band,
Elizabeth Simmons closed the rally by
reading 1 Timothy 4:12: "Let no one
despise your youth, but set the
believers an example in speech and
conduct, in love, in faith, in
purity."

Athens First United Methodist Church,
the Athens-Elberton District, and the
North Georgia Conference scored a
touchdown June 14 with a youth rally
held in conjunction with 2004 Annual
Conference session in
Athens.
Young people from more than 25
churches gathered at Athens First to
eat pizza, hear bands, and visit with
University of Georgia football star --
and fellow United Methodist -- David
Greene.

He commended the young people for
being at the rally, saying that being
involved with a church is part of
staying on the right track.
