What
came through repeatedly was his
conviction that the President of the
United States must give leadership in
helping change culture. "I can be a
voice of cultural change," he told
us. Mr.
Bush spoke about his opposition to
abortion and his commitment to "promote
a culture of life, with every child
welcomed to life and protected by
law." The
president also talked about
his
commitment
to a constitutional amendment that
would define marriage as being between
a man and a woman. I was
pleased to tell him that on May 1 our
United Methodist General Conference
passed a resolution (with no debate and
by an overwhelming margin) supporting
civil laws defining marriage as between
a man and a woman, adding that we are
the first and only mainline
denomination to take such action.
Mr.
Bush stressed the need for the American
people need to speak out and
communicate with their Congressional
representatives about defining
marriage. "I
don't want this [issue] decided
by judges," he said, expressing his
concern that the courts could well
decide the definition-of-marriage
question for the entire nation.
It
was refreshing to hear the president
speak about prayer, about all the
people who are praying for him, about
the effectiveness of faith-based
initiatives,
and about reading from Oswald
Chambers
each morning as he begins his
day. George
W. Bush is relaxed and confident as he
speaks about the stabilizing impact of
his personal faith. It was a reminder
that we all need to continue praying
for him, as Scripture exhorts us to
do. Jim

Methodist Layman of the
Year.

A
conversation
with President Bush
by James
V. Heidinger II
President and publisher of Good
News
Joined by eight other Christian
journalists, I had the great
opportunity to visit the White House in
late May and meet with President George
W. Bush.
I must confess, the whole
experience was unreal! I ended up
sitting right across from the
president, about four feet away, as he
spoke about issues such as Iraq,
faith-based initiatives, America's
culture, abortion, and the
Federal
Marriage
Amendment.
