I
hope that 2005 will witness a renewal
of mission across our Conferenece -- a
renewal that causes us to live more
completely as an authentic New
Testament church, letting Acts 1:8
guide our life together. Jesus
promises followers the power of the
Holy Spirit and instructs them to be
His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea,
Samaria, and to the ends of the eath.
How
fortunate that the United Methodist
Church already is structured to fulfill
this Great Commission through local,
conference, jurisdictional and general
church ministries: Jerusalem
-- your local church making a
holy difference in your local
community; Judea
-- the larger geographic
region, the 72 counties of the
North Georgia
Conference; Samaria
-- the Southeastern
Jurisdictional ministries and
national projects all over the
United States; and The
ends of the earth -- all over
the world through our General
Board of Global Ministries,
UMCOR and hundreds of other
United Methodist
organizations. Our
task is much greater than how many
people we can physically welcome into
our own churches -- our parish is the
world. Let
us not settle for a small
vision. May 2005 be a time when we
receive the Holy Spirit anew and
radiate the love of God throughout a
hurting and troubled world. There
is a desperate need in our conference
for churches that are passionate about
multiplying disciples of Jesus Christ
and equipping them to follow the Lord
into the worldwide mission field.
This
is the essence of a New Testament
church. Such congregations have been
known to turn the world upside down.

No
small vision
Our
parish is the world
(Jesus in Acts
1:8)
In
many congregations, the belief that
"the church is for the world" is forced
to compete with a selfish view that
"the church is for us."
