SPRING 2007

Methodists to invade Athens!
The Classic Center is again site of annual gathering

United Methodists from across North Georgia -- including Gateway's pastor Jerry Varnado and our lay delegate Nancy Fajardo -- will gather at the Classic Center June 11-15 for the 2007 Session of the North Georgia Conference.

Delegates will gather in
the Classic Center's Grand Hall
In the United Methodist Church,
Conferences (technically called "Annual Conferences") are made up of all the UM churches in a certain geographical area.

The North Georgia Conference is the largest conference in our denomination, with more than 900 churches and nearly 350,000 members.

Held each June, Annual Conference sessions are a cross between a business meeting and a family reunion.

Delegates to a Conference session have the right to vote in certain matters affecting the church, such setting the Conference budget, adopting Conference goals, and electing delegates to the 2008 General Conference (the quadrennial meeting of United Methodists from around the world).

An annual conference session also includes times of worship, testimony, and Bible teaching.

The theme of this year North Georgia gathering is "We Are Called to Walk Humbly With God," based on a text from the Old Testament book of Micah.

On Wednesday, June 13, conference delegates and members of area UM churches will disperse around Athens for the annual
Great Day of Service, which will include work on various mission projects, ranging from nursing home visitation to doing cleanup in area parks.

The presiding officer of the 2007 session will be North Georgia's resident bishop, Lindsey Davis. Audio/video streaming will be available here.
