Turn your (Christian) radio on

Filling your mind with ungodly ideas, sounds, and images can harm your spiritual life. On the other hand, putting godly stuff in your mind will help you "live a life worthy of the calling you have received" (Eph. 4:1).

One source of edifying input is Christian radio. The Athens area is blessed with several stations, appealing to listeners of differing tastes.

88.1-FM -- CSN International (Calvary Satellite Network) -- CSN is the broadcast outreach of Calvary Chapel, an association of churches that grew out of the California-based Jesus Movement in the 1960s and 70s.

CSN, aired locally on a low-power station licensed to Calvary Chapel-Athens, carries excellent Bible teaching from pastors of Calvary Chapel churches around the nation. Musically, CSN airs primarily contemporary praise-and-worship music.

88.9-FM -- WMSL (Great 88) -- Licensed to Prince Avenue Christian School, WMSL airs a blend of traditional hymns, contemporary praise-and-worship music, and songs by popular Christian singers.

The station programs music more than 20 hours a day, with brief breaks for news and short features.

In the evening, WMSL airs popular Christian programs such as Adventures in Odyssey and Focus on the Family.

89.5-FM -- BBN (Bible Broadcasting Network) -- BBN, a nationwide network based in Charlotte, N.C., broadcasts many of today's top Bible teachers, including Chuck Swindoll, John MacArthur, and Erwin Lutzer. Musically, the network is extremely conservative and airs no contemporary music.

The BBN station at 89.5 airs from Winder.

90.9-FM -- TFC Radio Network (WRAF-Toccoa Falls College) -- The TFC Network carries many of the most popular national radio programs, such as Focus on the Family, Money Matters, and Insight for Living.

Musically, the network airs primarily up-to-date arrangements of traditional music. Contemporary songs air occasionally.

91.5-FM -- WWEV (VICTORY 91.5) -- WWEV's music is mostly upbeat pop. The station, broadcasting from Cumming, also airs several excellent Bible teachers, including Paul Walker and Mark Rutland.

102.7-FM -- Good News Network -- The Good News Network's station in Greene County reaches Athens with number of excellent programs from the Moody Broadcasting Network, including Prime Time America (late afternoons) and Open Line (9-10 p.m.).

The Augusta-based Good News Network operates several stations across the Southeast.

104.7-FM -- THE FISH (WFSH) -- The Fish delivers a 24-hour-a-day, all-music format of Christian pop with a strong signal that stretches from Athens to Atlanta.
