Receiving revelation

Jerry Varnado, pastor
Gateway Church, Athens GA

April 25, 2004

  • Main Scripture text: Luke 24:13-35.

  • The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had fully expected Jesus to run the Romans back to Italy and then sit down on throne of Israel as her Messianic King.

  • Now, they think Jesus is dead. They know the Romans are still in control. Their hopes are shattered.

  • The risen Jesus comes along and starts talking to them, but they don't recognize him. Maybe God hid his true identity in some way we don't understand.

  • Whatever the case, the application to us is clear: The truth of who Jesus is cannot be known from physical evidence alone.

  • Revelation from God comes through our spiritual senses, not our physical senses. That's why Jesus told Nicodemus, "You must be born again of the Spirit," so you can see.

  • These two men on the road to Emmaus knew the facts, but they didn't know the truth.

  • The same was true for me earlier in my life. I knew all the facts about Jesus, but I didn't know the truth. I didn't really understand who Jesus is -- or the implications to my life of who He is.

  • Our world is full of people in the same boat. They know all the facts, but have no revelation of the truth.

  • God wants to reveal truth to us. He wants us to know Him. If you are earnestly seeking God, He will reward you with Himself.

  • There are probably some here today who, like the two men on the road to Emmaus, have known bitter disappointment. You have hoped for something, but events have caused you to lose that hope -- and even to doubt God's love and power.

  • Remember this: In the death of Christ, God did something far greater than overthrowing Roman oppression of Israel -- that was what these two men on the road to Emmaus had been hoping for.

  • Instead, God overthrew the reign of sin and death!

  • If you haven't seen God's answer yet, ask Him to open your eyes. He may well be doing something infinitely greater than the thing for which you've been asking.
